Non-Functional Testing Methodologies

Non-functional testing is a type of software testing methodology that explores software’s performance, security, and usability in addition to its functionality. Non-functional testing ensures the software’s performance, security, and usability. These types of methodologies include:

1.     Performance Testing

Performance testing is a type of non-functional testing that ensures that the software performs as expected. This is assessed in terms of response time, throughput, and resource consumption.

The performance of the software is tested under a variety of loads like average, peak, and stressful loads. The peak load primarily represents the maximum workload that the software can handle, whereas the normal load only represents the expected workload. The stress load is basically defined as a workload that is too much for the software to handle, resulting in a failure.

2.     Security Testing

Data security and storage in software are becoming more and more necessary due to the increase in cyberattacks and cloud-based testing platforms.  Security testing involves testing the software for different types of vulnerabilities.

This can include authentication and authorization vulnerabilities, SQL injection vulnerabilities, and more. This type of software testing also involves assessing the software’s compliance with industry standards and regulations, such as PCI DSS, HIPAA, and GDPR.
