Types of Software Testing Methodologies

In the fiercely cutthroat software industry, there is no room for error. The software development life cycle depends on software testing methodologies because they specify how tests should be carried out.

If you want to guarantee that your software is stable and bug-free, make sure to conduct various types of testing because testing is the only procedure that can guarantee an application is bug-free.

Software testing is such a process that ensures that the final product meets the expected quality and functionality standards. There are various types of software testing methodologies that are used to test the software for its functionality, reliability, and security.

Functional Testing Methodologies

Functional testing is a kind of software testing methodology that tests the functionality of software to ensure that it meets the needs of end users. It entails testing each unit or component of the software system to ensure that it functions properly. These types of methodologies include:

1.     Unit Testing

Unit testing is a type of functional testing methodology that tests each unit or component of the software system in isolation. The primary objective of this type of software testing is to deeply assess each unit or component’s behavior, functionality, and correctness. It is usually performed by the developers themselves or by a dedicated team of testers who work closely with developers.

Unit testing involves writing test cases for each unit or component and executing them to ensure that they pass. The test cases usually cover a wide range of scenarios that could occur in the unit or component.

2.     Integration Testing

Integration testing is a type of functional testing methodology that tests the interactions between different units or components of the software system. The main objective of integration testing ensures that the units/components of the software work together as expected.

It involves testing the interfaces between the units or components and ensuring that the data flows correctly between them. Integration testing helps identify defects that could occur due to the interactions between the units or components, making it easier to fix them.

Non-Functional Testing Methodologies

Non-functional testing is a type of software testing methodology that explores software’s performance, security, and usability in addition to its functionality. Non-functional testing ensures the software’s performance, security, and usability. These types of methodologies include:

1.     Performance Testing

Performance testing is a type of non-functional testing that ensures that the software performs as expected. This is assessed in terms of response time, throughput, and resource consumption.

The performance of the software is tested under a variety of loads like average, peak, and stressful loads. The peak load primarily represents the maximum workload that the software can handle, whereas the normal load only represents the expected workload. The stress load is basically defined as a workload that is too much for the software to handle, resulting in a failure.

2.     Security Testing

Data security and storage in software are becoming more and more necessary due to the increase in cyberattacks and cloud-based testing platforms.  Security testing involves testing the software for different types of vulnerabilities.

This can include authentication and authorization vulnerabilities, SQL injection vulnerabilities, and more. This type of software testing also involves assessing the software’s compliance with industry standards and regulations, such as PCI DSS, HIPAA, and GDPR.
